Remarkably efficient, the design of the Ford C-Max hybrid packs an impressive amount of room and utility into a small footprint.

Outward visibility is great, though the driving position could be a bit more spacious. While the rear seat is a bit flat and low, it's roomy enough to seat three. On the tech front, Ford's optional Sync 3 infotainment touchscreen is highly intuitive and readily accessible.

Ford's MyKey system allows parents to program their teenaged driver's key to limit top speed and radio volume, as well as inform them if the car ventures outside of a specific geographic area.

However, a backup camera is part of an expensive options package and cargo space is somewhat compromised by the large battery pack. Don't get stuck with a two- or three-row model you'll regret buying when there are better, more reliable ones. Most Fuel-Efficient Cars. These gas sippers are easy on the wallet. You no longer have digital access to ratings and reviews. The Ford C-Max is past its sell-by date and will be discontinued after this year. It's a tall hatchback available as hybrid or plug-in hybrid.

The higher-volume C-max Hybrid suffered from a pair of reductions in its EPA fuel-economy rating, and has not sold particularly well as gasoline has remained cheap. Ford announced it would end production of the C-Max in We rate the C-Max at 5. Read more about how we rate cars. Those include the latest Prius and Prius Prime, the second-generation Chevrolet Volt, and several hybrid mid-size sedans, as well a growing variety of all-electric models with miles or more of range.

This is likely to be the last—or perhaps second to last—model year for the C-Max pair. While the model will continue in Europe, Ford is expected to introduce a new vehicle in the U. That car, rumored to be named Model E, is likely to replace both C-Max versions and the low-volume Focus Electric model as well.

Ford C series

The C-Max is essentially unchanged forfollowing the addition of a standard rearview camera last year. Two new paint colors have been added. Below the slightly bulbous hatchback shape of the Ford C-Max are the underpinnings of the Focus hatchback.

That type of vehicle has sold well in Europe, where the C-Max originated, but has never been popular in the U.

We rate the C-Max and 4 out of a possible 10 points for styling, deducting one point for its essentially dumpy exterior shape and details.

The traditional Ford trapezoidal grille up front reinforces the brand identity on the C-Max; it received extremely minor tweaks last year, but remains bottom-heavy and awkward. The interior remains appealing even after six years, with high-quality materials and a stylish dash with touches of brightwork.

Soft-touch materials, appealing seat fabrics, and a more traditional and coherent set of instruments and controls add up to a more reassuring and premium impression than the odd central information display and unusual controls of the Prius.

Ford lets owners configure the instrument screens to show the operating information they prefer. Ford has updated its hybrid system only slightly over six years, meaning that the Ford C-Max has been surpassed in acceleration and fuel economy by numerous more modern vehicles.

While it drove nicely against the Toyota Prius, the newer generation of that car and a host of recent hybrid sedans offer a better balance of acceleration, fuel economy, and nimbleness. We rate the C-Max at 4 points out of 10, deducting a point for its heavy road feel and slow acceleration.

Remarkably, the current Prius is now roughly on a par with the C-Max for driving quality, something almost unimaginable at its launch. The C-Max is powered by a 2. The tall hatchback is several hundred pounds heavier than the new Toyota Prius, rated at just horsepower, but the added power is needed to move the weight around. Like all hybrids, both C-Max versions can travel on electric power alone at lower speeds.

The 1. The larger 7. Still, its range is lower than the 25 miles of the Prius Prime, various plug-in hybrid sedans in the high 20s, and 53 miles for the latest Chevrolet Volt. When the gas engine starts, its power blends in seamlessly and noise suppression remains good. That car is fully pounds lighter, and its responsiveness shows it. Its steering has good feel and makes the car precise and easy to place.

For a compact car, the tall shape of the Ford C-Max offers remarkable interior space for four adults, though load-bay space for their luggage falls short due to the battery sited underneath.

We rate the C-Max at 5 points out of 10, giving it an extra point for a spacious and comfortable interior but deducting a point for the average cargo space in the hybrid and much smaller-than-expected volume in the Energi version. In Europe, a slightly longer version of the C-Max is a small three-row minivan, so interior volume is a priority, and it misses the NHTSA classification for a mid-size car by only a fraction of a cubic foot.

The front seats of the C-Max are nicely bolstered and comfortable, and occupants will find plenty of leg room and head room front and rear. While comfortable and competent, the C-Max's high EPA-estimated fuel-economy numbers are basically fantasy.

When Ford introduced the C-Max hybrid to the U. In the years since its introduction, the industry has moved much closer to that efficient future while the C-Max has rested on its laurels. It has skated by with only minor updates in the face of upgrades from competition such as the Chevrolet Bolt EV and the Hyundai Ioniq.

There are still things we like about the C-Max: it's more fun to drive than most hybrids thanks to the underpinnings it shares with the nimble Ford Focus, and the cargo hold has more space than many sedans.

But with lackluster fuel economy and outdated styling, its futuristic luster has paled to near irrelevance. Rumors are flying that Ford will end U. The plug-in Energi version was discontinued at the end of the model year, leaving the C-Max hybrid to soldier on alone unchanged from With no plug-in model on the menu and only two available trim levels for the remaining hybrid, there aren't many decisions to make when buying a C-Max.

The lineup starts with the SE trim, but we'd choose the ritzier Titanium model for its quasi-luxurious interior touches. That trim includes niceties such as leather seating, heated front seats, the Sync3 infotainment system, and rear parking sensors.

Likes: Speedier than most other hybrids, refined powertrain, athletic chassis. Dislikes: Not as efficient as rivals, lackluster cornering grip, top-heavy feeling in corners. The C-Max hybrid powertrain is refined and well-integrated, and the transition from electric power to gasoline operation is practically seamless.

We'd prefer if the C-Max were either zippy or hyper-efficient instead of occupying an unsatisfying middle ground. The powertrain consists of a continuously variable automatic transmission CVTa 2. At our test track, the C-Max managed a 7.

The C-Max rides on the same platform as the athletic Ford Focusand many of the Focus's desirable driving characteristics shine through. Steering responses are accurate, and effort is pleasantly hefty. The tall C-Max leans a bit in corners, and its performance on the skidpad—a test designed more to measure a car's ability to hold the road when cornering than how it feels while doing it—was just okay. The C-Max struggles to match other hybrids for efficiency.

It has the lowest EPA ratings among its rivals and doesn't come close to cresting 50 mpg in any metric, a mark the competition such as the Ioniq and the Toyota Prius vault over with ease.

On our real-world highway fuel-economy test route, the C-Max delivered a lackluster 33 mpg. Likes: Spacious and comfortable interior, simple infotainment setup, plenty of cargo room. Dislikes: Dated interior design, bulky dash-mounted shifter, base infotainment system is basic. The C-Max's interior is comfortable, but it's a generation behind Ford's newest offerings in its design, materials, and finishes.

2018 Ford C-Max

The center stack's layout in particular is beginning to look its age. Power-adjustable cloth seats are standard in the C-Max, but leather-trimmed front seats are standard in Titanium models. We had no qualms with the seats in the base SE model we tested, but the large, high-mounted shifter and mechanical parking brake in SE models take up much of the front row's choicest real estate. Ford's Sync and Sync 3 systems are simple to use, and even the base-trim C-Max comes standard with plenty of power points.

We wish Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard—they're optional—but Sync is still more intuitive than the standard offerings from many other automakers. The C-Max is among the more spacious members of this class. Its hatchback body style means it has a large, tall cargo hold, and its in-cabin storage is ample. The C-Max's rear seats flip down easily using a lever mounted on the outboard side of each seat; they fold parallel to the floor and make a flat load surface.

We managed to fit six carry-on suitcases behind the rear seat and a whopping 20 with the rear seats folded. Compared with others in the class, the C-Max's driver-assistance technology offerings are sparse. Key safety features include:. Ford's warranty coverage is about average but can't compete with the complimentary scheduled maintenance offered by the Prius.Born from the size-sensitive European market, where even compacts must haul families and cargo, the Ford C-Max packs plenty of capability into its small size.

It has a bit of a crossoverlike look to it, but it's more accurate to think of it as a compact wagon or hatchback that's big enough for large tasks yet small and easy to manage for around-town driving. This generation C-Max has been around for a while, but there's still a lot to like, including refined ride and handling and a comfortable interior done up in high-quality materials.

You can also get a plug-in hybrid version with a larger battery called the C-Max Energi. It's worth noting that the C-Max Hybrid's powertrain doesn't deliver fuel economy as high as the mpg figures from some newer rivals. The latest Prius returns up to 56 mpg, for example, and the Hyundai Ioniq tops out at 58 mpg.

Kia's new Niro, which has a body design similar to the C-Max's, also bests it with a 50 mpg rating. For most buyers, though, the Ford C-Max Hybrid should serve well as a versatile and reasonably efficient vehicle. The Ford C-Max Hybrid is a five-passenger wagon available in two trim levels. The SE is priced for the budget-minded, but it's still very functional. Titanium models feature luxury accoutrements.

A plug-in hybrid version, the Ford C-Max Energi, is reviewed separately. No matter which C-Max variant you buy, it'll come with a 2.

Combined output is horsepower. Power is then sent to the front wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission CVT.

Major options are now grouped into packages, starting with the SE Driver Assist package that bundles a power liftgate, rear parking sensors, and the Sync 3 interface with an 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and an extra USB port. The SE Comfort package adds heated mirrors, leather seating upholstery, a power-adjustable front passenger seat and heated front seats. Alternately, go for the Cold Weather package for just the heated mirrors and heated front seats.

A panoramic glass roof, keyless entry keypad and a navigation system are available as stand-alone options. The Titanium model adds foglights, automatic wipers, the heated mirrors and seats, leather upholstery, the power-adjustable front passenger seat, keyless ignition and entry, remote start, ambient lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a premium Sony audio system with nine speakers and HD radio.Toggle navigation conceptcarz.

Expand All New for Utility Cargo Space and Interior Room. The Ford C series is a range of trucks that was assembled by Ford between and The C-series was also used as a basis for fire apparatus production.

Produced for 33 years nearly unchanged with the exception of its powertrainthe C-series was the longest-produced commercial truck in North America at the time of its withdrawal; only the Mack Model R 39 years and Kenworth W 59 years have remained in production longer. InFord began phasing in the Ford Cargo in North America, serving as its replacement after the model year.

Like other automotive manufacturers that built COE trucks before the s, early Ford C-series trucks were "helmet-shaped", cab-forward trucks that shared components with pickup trucks the F series, in this case.

Forthey were redesignated the C series, but largely remained modified F-series trucks. Like the F, the C also included a "Big Job" model. Diesel-engined trucks included an extra zero in the model designations i. C or C As Ford started squaring off its vehicles inthey finally gave the cab-overs their own designs separate from the rest of the Ford truck lineup. Variations of this emblem were found on many other Ford trucks during the s and into the s.

The C series held onto this logo the longest. In a fashion similar to the Checker Marathon or Volkswagen Beetlechanges to the C-series trucks throughout its production were very subtle. If anywhere, many of these changes were identifiable by the changes in the cowl insignias and badging.

Between andthe C series used a quad-headlight fascia. This was helpful for fire departments, which wanted to use the extra headlight bezels for emergency flashers, an option that was offered exclusively to fire, and other emergency vehicles after Another option included a small sleeper cab. Forthe C series was updated with the same cowl insignias used by the rest of the medium- and heavy-duty truck line up.

The logo had the word FORD on top of a trapezoid with the model number designation. This insignia was used until Infederal regulations required all automotive manufacturers to add side marker reflectors or lights, which Ford was able to add to the new cowl insignia used on the F series since That same year, Ford decided to add this insignia on the doors of the C series, as well.

Unlike the Ford F series, which removed them forthe C series would retain them until the end of production in Afterthe Canadian Mercury version of the C series was discontinued, becoming the last Mercury truck until the Mercury Villager.
